Torrential Rains Hit Margibi


first_imgOver 200 residents in Margibi County have been made homeless due to heavy downpour of rain on Wednesday June 29.In Kakata City alone, many residents’ homes were flooded and several houses and belongings damaged.Communities affected by the flood included Bassa Community, Denisville and Bensville, Borlorla Road, 14th Road, Kissi Community as well as other swamp areas in Kakata.Expressing frustration over the incident, Mr. Joseph S. Pallay, 63, said about 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, he woke up to see his house entirely flooded. He said all of his belongings in his house and those of his neighbors were destroyed. He described the situation not only as embarrassing but devastating to the affected communities.Mr. Pallay said he has over 15 family members and the flooding has exhausted his resources to take care of his family. He is appealing to the government for prompt intervention.“We need food and shelter,” he said.Mr. Pallay further narrated that Wednesday’s flooding is the second since 2007. He said he moved to the community over 15 years ago. He blamed poor management of drainages in the county as one of the factors contributing to the flooding. Gbandi Governor Samakai Dunor described the flooding as troubling and wants stakeholders to promptly address issues leading to flood disaster in the city.He said if flooding in the county is not contained it could lead to environment hazard and lamented that some children in the affected communities have begun experiencing ailments, including running stomach, malaria and skin diseases.When contacted via mobile, the newly appointed Development Superintendent Joshua Robertson said, authorities in the county have begun verifying the flooding situation and they would work along with the county disaster team and humanitarian partners operating in the county to respond to concerns of affected communities.Additional areas that were badly flooded in lower Margibi County included Joe Brooks Town and Du Bridge located around Division #2, Firestone. first_imgTHERE were mixed fortunes for Donegal teams today.Donegal’s Minors have won the Ulster League after a five point victory over Tyrone at Brewster Park in Enniskillen.Declan Bonner’s young charges beat the red-hand county 1-15 to 2-07 in the final clash, leading throughout and only conceding the second goal late on. Tyrone’s Cormac O’Hagan was also sent off.
