SA extends African peace missions

first_img23 March 2006South Africa is to inject more resources into its African peace missions, extending the stay of its peacekeeping troops in four countries and sending a new detachment of peacekeepers to the Comoros ahead of presidential elections in that country.Government spokesperson Joel Netshitenzhe told reporters in Cape Town on Wednesday that South Africa was closely monitoring developments in politically unstable areas on the continent.Netshitenzhe said the Cabinet had decided to extend the deployment of members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in four African countries – Burundi, Cote d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Sudan – until 31 March 2007.South Africa has 950 SANDF members in Burundi as part of a UN operation; 46 SANDF members supporting the disarmament, demobilisation, reintegration and mediation process in Cote d’Ivoire; 339 SANDF members in Sudan as part of an African Union mission; and 110 SANDF members in the DRC.Netshitenzhe said an additional 14 SANDF members would be sent to the DRC to lend support with the integration and training of DRC soldiers.Netshitenzhe said South Africa would also deploy 371 SANDF members in the Comoros as part of an African Union force that will help to ensure an environment conducive to free and fair presidential elections. He added that South Africa had recently donated 10 tons of DDT to Mozambique to assist that country in its campaign to control malaria.“South Africa will also assist with training in the safe handling, application and monitoring of the use of insecticides in keeping with guideline of the World Health Organisation,” he said.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

South African universities among the best

Two local universities, the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University, have achieved top honours by being listed in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for 2011/12.First published in 2004, the QS ranking is a respected global career and education network. Prospective students and staff from all over the world use the information to decide where to study and advance their academic careers.Stellenbosch University (SU) received double honours as it was included in the QS listing’s top 500 universities, and also came in third highest on the African continent. The University of Cape Town (UCT) was placed in 156th position, up from 161 last year. The QS system also continues to name UCT as the only university in Africa in the top 200.The QS system makes use of six indicators to determine an international ranking: academic reputation (40%); employer reputation (10%); citations per faculty (20%); faculty student ratio (20%); proportion of international students (5%); and proportion of international faculty (5%). The top universities world-wide are then selected out of 2 000 institutions.Recognising outstanding teaching and researchProf Russel Botman, SU’s rector and vice-chancellor, says that inclusion in the QS listing is a significant achievement for the university as it indicates that the international community has taken notice of the excellence of its teaching and research.Stellenbosch University has done ground-breaking work as part of its HOPE project in the areas of nano-fibre water filter technology, food security, HIV/Aids, paediatric tuberculosis and various other research initiatives. The HOPE project supports the UN’s Millennium Development Goals by focusing on world-class research aimed at improving the lives of South Africans and people elsewhere on the continent.“Although we don’t chase rankings, we are proud to be recognised by our peers in this way. It is an important feather in our cap,” Botman says, adding that the rankings also expose local academics and students to more opportunities for research collaboration and exchange. He says that SU has done a lot of work to improve its research output, and has received recognition as the university that delivers the most research output in the country per academic staff member. However, he was surprised at the ranking received for international visibility. “The university has been working very hard to improve its international presence and visibility for the past four years, but we didn’t know that our work would be noticed so quickly,” he says. Results of research conducted by Stellenbosch University in 2007 revealed that internationally the university wasn’t well known for the quality of its academic programmes. However, people were aware of the institution’s negative apartheid history.“The ranking shows that our strategy to improve visibility of the university and bring about transformation is correct,” says Botman.International recognition of this kind is beneficial for individual tertiary institutions and the country. UCT’s executive director of communications and marketing, Gerda Kruger, said in a statement that a good performance on the QS list sends the message that South Africans can get a world-class education without leaving the country.last_img read more

Uncovering Connections on Twitter Could Become Big Business

first_imgIf there’s a hard-to-reach person you want to meet, one of the best ways to do so is through their friends. That’s true in the offline world and the increasingly social nature of the internet may make discovery of the social circles of key influencers a powerful business practice online. A new class of tools intended to surface influencers and the people they are influenced by are focusing on a hub of rapid, connected conversation that’s wide open for analysis – Twitter. Could analysis of individual behavior on Twitter become a valuable tool for business development and marketing? A growing number of startup companies are making a case that it could.Last week Twitter announced that it will soon allow users to create lists of friends that they can share with others. It’s an attempt to make user discovery easier and it’s cute, but it looks pretty rudimentary at a time when some companies are building enterprise-scale software for real-time discovery and analysis of circles of Twitter users, their expertise, influence and sentiment on topics. On the margins of the developing Twitter-as-business tool ecosystem are startups building light-weight influencer discovery and analysis tools. Two of the most interesting yet have launched in the last 24 hours, in fact.Shining a Light on Webs of ConnectionStill one of the most useful tools in this group, if still largely a proof of concept, is Pete Warden’s Mailana. Give Mailana a Twitter username and it will tell you who the top 20 people that user has had reciprocal public conversations with on Twitter – who they are engaging with the most. Want to get into the world of Lewis Shepherd, CTO of Microsoft Institute for Advanced Technology in Governments? (It’s his birthday today, by the way.) Then you might consider joining CTOvision.com author Bob Gourley, Purdue University Cyber War Researcher Samuel Liles and Dr. Mark Drapeau in conversation on Twitter. That’s who Shepherd communicates with the most there, according to Mailana.Friendship Discovery As a ServiceIt may be a sign of market maturation that some companies are now offering APIs for this kind of functionality and others are integrating it into their core products. Yesterday social media aggregator Seesmic integrated into its web application a feature from Twitter recommendation service Mr.Tweet that surfaces what other users or anyone “pays the most attention to” on Twitter. This is really useful – you can discover key people for any influencer you follow with just a few clicks. Did you know that local-blogging guru Lisa Williams is a very close contact of media consultant Amy Gahran? I did because I’ve been following them both for years – but now you can discover that connection programmatically, with a click. The platform is wide open for analysis and exposing a person’s “social graph” is wildly valuable for discovery, context, relationship building and more. There’s going to be a whole lot more development in this direction.Influencer Discovery For SaleWill people pay for this kind of information? If they are smart they will. Popular Twitter shared link tracking service Tweetmeme released its first paid product this morning and is betting it can monetize influencer discovery. The new Tweetmeme Analytics service does a number of things, but the most useful feature may be what it calls “retweet trees.” Publishers can surface the chain of retweets that passed their links around and see which Twitter users had the biggest impact on a chain of retweets.Tweetmeme is surfacing other types of data as well and there’s potential for that data to be organized, cross referenced and displayed in a wide variety of ways. Tweetmeme is already performing text analysis of the pages being shared on Twitter, so content type could become another axis point to look at the data around. All of these services are in early days. If people will in fact pay for them, then they will develop all the more. It’s a greenfield of possible added value. Finding out who is of interest to people of interest to you is a classic business activity, open social networking like Twitter makes that possible in newly interesting and efficient ways. Lack of funds remains a roadblock for R.K. Khanna Tennis Stadium

first_imgIn the case of tennis, the popularity of the game in the metros, coupled with the success of Leander Paes, Sania Mirza, Mahesh Bhupathi and Somdev Devvarman has ensured a steady flow of young hopefuls taking up the game. The hosting of the CWG meant a massive makeover of the R.K. Khanna Tennis Stadium in the Capital. The stadium has 14 fields of play and the courts are utilised for approximately 10 hours.Nearly 500-600 youngsters practice every day and after the CWG, more than 20 tournaments, including Challengers and Nationals have been held here. The ‘Come and Play’ scheme of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) will also be implemented and 50 children have already been shortlisted for the programme. But the going has not been smooth for the stadium authorities as they do not get any funding from the government for the maintenance, and getting sponsors for the ITF tournaments is also an uphill task.”The maintenance of the stadium entails a lot of money and we do face some teething problems. But with players from Iran and Nepal also utilising the facilities with our national teams , we somehow manage to keep things going,” said R. Chauhan, Executive Director – Development and Marketing, All India Tennis Association. He also stressed the importance of conducting more tournaments. “We should conduct more ITF and Challenger tournaments. But funds are an issue. We are planning to submit a plan to the government and apprise them of the benefits of more tournaments. Our players will immensely benefit from it and their rankings will also improve if they play more Challenger tournaments in home conditions,” he added.advertisementlast_img read more
