Adibe Emenyonu in Benin CityEdo State government is to set up a technical committee to plan a three-year development programme for the Okpekpe 10km Road Race even as May 12 has already been picked for next year’s edition. The Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, disclosed this on Tuesday, when he played host to the promoter of the race, Mike Itemuagbor, who was at the Government House in Benin on appreciation visit to government for the successful hosting of this year’s event which held last Saturday. The deputy governor who received Itemuagbor and his entourage on behalf of Governor Godwin Obaseki said the technical committee was to ensure sustainability of the programme and also map out ways of bringing in more investors into the race to boost the economy of the host community and encourage more participation of local athletes.Shaibu also praised the introduction of technology in this year’s race, stressing that the innovation has brought credibility to the race.“I congratulate you on the successful hosting of this year’s event. The most important aspect of this year’s event is the integrity that was emphasised. Playing by the rules of the game made it real. This has also brought integrity to the race,” he said. The deputy governor expressed joy that the race has brought Okpekpe into the eyes and hearts of sports lovers around the world, indeed, the map of the world. This, he said, will in turn attract potential investors to the community. On his part, Itemuagbor who announced May 12 as date for next year’s race, revealed that revenue from private sector this year had an increase of about 20 per cent.On improvements in the upcoming editions of the race, the Okpekpe race promoter said beyond the use of transponders and split mast, the organisers are working on an upgrade to raise the standard of the event, in order to bring it to the same standard with the Boston and London marathons. He explained that with the improved revenue generation, there would be more commercialisation of the competition in successive editions. On how to encourage more participation of local athletes, Itemuagbor said the bulk of the work lies on the table of the sports councils and ministries to train and encourage athletes while the local people must imbibe the culture of participation and should be hungry to challenge the foreign athletes, as the organisers have created a level playing field for all athletes.Itemuagbor and his team also presented some souvenirs including the Okpekpe race goodies pack, towels, and customised tables to the governor in appreciation of his commitment to the sustainability of the IAAF bronze labelled international race.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram

But one of things the Lady Crusaders have not been able to do is win an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV title.Tuesday was a great start as Wellington defeated Andale 59-43 on the road. Senior Grace Mitchell scored 31 points in the victory.Wellington boys would lose to Andale 63-26.The game almost seemed ho-hum, but it was historical on so many fronts. This may have been the first time in Wellington girls basketball history that the Crusaders have started a season at 4-0. This also may have been the first time in years that Wellington has gone to Andale and beaten the Lady Indians at their place.Even during the Charlie Angels years, Wellington could not win in Andale. The Crusaders oftentimes would beat Andale at home in February, but never in Andale in December. Typically, a trip to Andale comes two days off the Kingman Tournament and a combination of fatigue and it being Andale makes it a disastrous night for the Lady Dukes. Not this time. Wellington struggled early, falling behind in the first quarter. But an Avery Rusk 3-pointer at the buzzer would give the Crusaders an 18-17 lead.“We didn’t play well in the first quarter at all,†said Eric Adams, Wellington head girls basketball coach. “We really need to work on playing well for all four quarters.â€But in the second quarter, Wellington would explode on an 18-4 run, that was concluded with three steals and two layups by Mitchell and Lauryn Snipes in the final minute. Wellington was in front 36-21 at the half. The Crusaders would up the lead to 48-32 at the end of three quarters and would go on to win this one by 16. Whatever celebrating Wellington may have made after winning for the first time in Andale since Nam, was not displayed afterwards. It seemed like another day at the office.According to official WHS Maxprep stats, Wellington was 22 of 55 from the field for a 41 percent shooting success rate. Wellington was very effective beyond the arch, going 8 of 13. Mitchell led Wellington on rebounds with 11 while Tayland French had 8. Mitchell had three steals and four blocks. Snipes had four steals three assists.Wellington travels to Mulvane on Friday for the final game of 2015. 8 20 4 18 Andale 63 ———Wellington boys Andale held Wellington scoreless in the first quarter 18-0 and led 48-8 at the half en route to an easy win.
